how a mom of 5 finds time for herself

Monica is a very good friend of mine and a mom of 5 great kids ranging in age from 5 to 14.  I have always admired her and how she always makes time for girls night outs, cooking groups, Spanish classes, time with her husband, alone time and spending quality time with her kids.  Does she have some secret superpower that most of us don’t know about?  I had to find out and so last week over coffee and delicious croissants I interviewed her and was actually fascinated by her responses.

BeFunky_balance.jpgUnlike me, who thinks I need to make sure I schedule time for myself and really think about what am I going to do and where and how etc. Monica doesn’t do any of this.  She prioritizes her life and at the top of the list are her kids, husband and herself.  Making sure that her house is 100% spotless all the time is probably not on the top of the list.  Monica tends to be more easy going and so if someone calls her up to go out for lunch, a walk or try a cooking class she does it.  It wasn’t about over thinking everything and scheduling time but she did make it happen.

So, is there a right and wrong way of finding balance and making time for yourself in this very busy world?  Do you have to be more flexible and easy going or do you have to schedule the time?  I don’t think its one way or the other.   While I was kind of envious about Monica’s easy going approach and flexibility,  I am not sure I would ever be able to become that person.  My perfectionist, type A personality requires structure and so while I am going to try to be a bit more spontaneous, taking time for myself will probably require some planning.

What I hope you take away from this blog post is that everyone can have balance.  It does not matter what type of personality you have, whether you have 1 child or 5 or whether you are a stay at home mom or a working mom.  Just figure out what works for you and make it happen!
